SSCI 101: Cultural Diversity HomeThis is a featured page

Welcome to the Cultural Diversity wiki project. Each student will be assigned a topic and will contribute to the wiki on that topic. You may comment on, discuss, and participate in any other section of the wiki, but you will be graded on both your participation throughout the quarter and your contributions to your assigned project. You will be working with other students on the same topic and should collaborate freely.

The topics are listed below. You should type your name next to the topic on which you want to work (do this by clicking the "EasyEdit" button at the top of this page). There should be a maximum of five people per topic. Signing up is on a first come first served basis. Your participation will be graded on a weekly basis, and your contribution to the topic that you signed up for will be graded at the end of the project deadline.

After you have signed up, you will need to read everything in the "Getting Started" page and the "How To" page. Detailed information about your project is on the "Participation Guidelines" page. These are required reading! Please do not send me any questions about the Wiki without having read these pages first. Otherwise, your response will be, "See the guidelines in the Wiki for your answer."

You will also need to upload the text portion of your individual content area to Turnitin.com our anti-plagiarism website. See directions on Blackboard for how to submit the text portion of your assignment to Turn It In by the project deadline!

Cultural Diversity - Wiki Page Project - Description
Ethnic Groups in the United States
The goal of this project is to explore current ethnic diversity within the United States. Ethnicity means a sizable group of people sharing a common national, historical, religious, linguistic or cultural heritage. The class will be divided into teams of five members with each team assigned a different ethnic group to study. As stated earlier, you will need to sign up for a group below. Once there are five people signed up for a group then the group is closed to new members.

Once you have joined a group and read the instructions, you can begin contributing to the wiki page on your ethnic group. Your team will want to give an overview of the group you are describing. Please remember that you are describing ethnic groups in the United States, not the groups as they appear in their countries of origin. Your team may want to provide learning objects and divide the subjects into different aspects of the ethnic group's culture. For example you may want to have a category on dress, food, music, history of immigration, politics, religion, family life, customs, holidays, etc. Make sure that you cite any sources that you use if you are quoting someone, also remember to cite sources when you paraphrase another's words. Remember to put information in your own words, unless you are quoting someone. You may want to post pictures, links, videos, etc. The final result of the project is the wiki which your classmates can read to learn more about the ethic group your team described.

Chinese Drinks & Food - Chinese use every excuse to have a Tea Ceremonies –This is the opportunity to have or talk time with friends and family. This tea time is called a ceremony because any event that last over an hour is called a ceremony in the Western Culture. Tea is appreciated for the smell, taste, and each cup is compare to the previous cup. The tea is served in small cups that can be hidden between two hands. The contents usually contain only enough for 2 sips. Chinese first greeting when they pass in the streets is usually great “have you had tea yet “?

Hey guys, I think we should start getting ready to break up all the information and start putting this Wiki together.
If you guys want, we could each take a category and each be responsible for that information. These are the categories we have:
Historical Overview
The Struggle to Fit in
Religious Practices in the U.S.
The Changing Family
Food and Clothing
Notable Figures
Other Interesting information

There are 2 categories left that we could just all add too as a team or however you guys want.
If you have any other ideas just write it out.
Thanks!

It seems like it may be time to consider getting started with the Team Wiki on the Amish. I was wondering if the group members thought it might be a good idea to break down the categories and have each group member take responsibility for one category out of the following:
Historical Overview
The Struggle to Fit in
Religious Practices in the U.S.
The Changing Family
Food and Clothing
Notable Figures
Other Interesting information

This would leave us with 3 extra categories which we could split among us for contribution. The bibliography would be compiled out of the submissions of the rest of the group.

Let me know your thoughts and if this seems like a good structure, we can move forward with selecting our topics.
